# Language & locale (17 languages)

> Chief can show its interface in 17 languages, plus an automatic option that follows your browser or device settings.

## Set your language

Chief can show its interface in 17 languages, plus an automatic option that follows your browser or device settings.

1. Click your **avatar** in the top corner to open the [account menu](/help/account-settings/managing-your-profile), then click **Settings**.
2. On the **General** tab, find the **Language** section at the top.
3. Open the **Language** dropdown.
4. Choose a language, or choose **Detect automatically** to follow your browser or device language.

The interface updates right away. Your choice is remembered for next time.

## Languages you can pick

Chief supports these 17 languages, shown in their own script: English, 한국어 (Korean), Deutsch (German), Português (Portuguese), Norsk (Norwegian), Español (Spanish), Русский (Russian), 中文 (Chinese), 简体中文 (Simplified Chinese), 繁體中文 (Traditional Chinese), Bahasa Melayu (Malay), Français (French), Italiano (Italian), Nederlands (Dutch), עברית (Hebrew), العربية (Arabic), and Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian).

  ℹ️ **Good to Know:** The language setting changes the Chief interface. It does not translate your chats or files — though you can [translate a passage](/help/chatting-with-chief/the-text-selection-menu-act-on-any-passage) from an answer. Chief [answers in the language you write in](/help/chatting-with-chief/how-chats-work), so you can ask a question in any language regardless of this setting.

## Let Chief detect your language

Pick **Detect automatically** to remove your manual override. Chief then resolves your language from your browser or device settings each time you visit, so it follows you across machines without a fixed choice.

## FAQ

  <Accordion title="I changed the language but parts of the screen are still in English. Why?">
    Most of the interface is translated, but some newer labels or messages may still appear in English until their translations land. Your content and answers are unaffected.

  <Accordion title="My language keeps switching back on a different computer.">
    The language preference is [stored per browser](/help/account-settings/interface-preferences-enter-key-sidebar-advanced-mode). If you sign in on another machine, set it again there, or use **Detect automatically** so it follows your system language everywhere.

  <Accordion title="Hebrew and Arabic read right-to-left. Does the layout adjust?">
    Yes. Chief supports both languages; choose them from the Language dropdown like any other.
