# Renaming chats & auto-generated titles

> Chief gives each chat thread a title automatically based on your conversation, so your chat list stays easy to scan.

Chief gives each [chat thread](/help/chatting-with-chief/how-chats-work) a title automatically based on your conversation, so your [chat list](/help/getting-started/the-chief-interface-a-quick-tour) stays easy to scan. You can rename a chat yourself or ask Chief to generate a new title at any time.

## Rename a chat

</Frame>

1. Open the chat. Hover over the title at the top of the thread to reveal its inline buttons.
2. Click the **Edit title** (pencil) button. The title turns into a text field.
3. Type the new name, then press **Enter** (or click the green checkmark) to save. Press **Escape** (or the red X) to cancel.

<Note>
  ℹ️ **Good to Know:** You can also rename from the chat's action menu. Click the **⋯** (three-dot) **Chat actions menu** in the thread header and choose **Edit title**.

</Frame>

1. Hover over the title and click the **Regenerate title** (sparkle) button — or open the **⋯** menu and choose **Regenerate title**.
2. A spinner shows while Chief reads the conversation and writes a fresh title.
3. The new title replaces the old one automatically.

## FAQ

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="My new title didn't save — what happened?">
    Titles can't be empty and are capped at 255 characters. If you clear the field and try to save, you'll see "Title cannot be empty." If saving fails for another reason, you'll see "Failed to update title" — check [your connection](/help/chatting-with-chief/working-offline-draft-preservation) and try again.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Will regenerating the title change my conversation?">
    No. Regenerating only rewrites the chat's name. Your prompts and answers stay exactly as they are.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Where do I find the rename and regenerate controls?">
    They live in two places: as small inline buttons that appear when you hover over the chat title, and inside the **⋯** (three-dot) **Chat actions menu** in the thread header.
