# Gmail — read, search, draft, send, label, archive

> Gmail runs on your Google connection.

## Connect Gmail

Gmail runs on your [Google connection](/help/integrations/integrations-overview). Once Google is connected, Chief can read and search your mail, draft and send messages, and organize your inbox — labeling, archiving, and moving messages to Trash — right from a chat.

## Connect from a chat

The quickest path is to ask Chief to do something with your email. When Google isn't connected yet, Chief shows a **Connect Google** card.

1. [Ask Chief](/help/chatting-with-chief/how-chats-work) something email-related, for example "summarize my unread emails."
2. When the **Connect Google** card appears, click the **Connect Google** button.
3. If you're signed out, a sign-up window opens first; complete it and the connection resumes.
4. You're redirected to Google's consent screen. Review the access and approve it.
5. Google sends you back to Chief, and the email request continues.

<Warning>
  ⚠️ **Important:** If Chief shows "Reconnect Google to grant Calendar access" or a similar missing-permission message, it means [your existing connection](/help/troubleshooting/an-integration-disconnected-or-wont-sync) doesn't include the scope this action needs. Click **Connect Google** again and approve the additional access.
</Warning>

## What Chief can do once connected

* **Read and search** — list and open emails and full threads, including attachments, and surface unread messages.
* **Draft** — create and update drafts you can open in Gmail.
* **Send** — send an email after you approve it.
* **Organize** — label and remove labels, archive and move back to the inbox, star and unstar, mark read or unread, mark important or not important.
* **Trash** — move messages to Trash and restore them.

## Approving actions

Before Chief sends an email or moves messages to Trash, it shows a confirmation card — for example **Send this email?** or **Move to Trash?** — with the details and an **Approve** button. Nothing happens until you approve. You can let **Send emails** and **Move emails to trash** [run without asking each time](/help/integrations/managing-integration-permissions-connection-status) from the tools panel.

## FAQ

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Chief says it can't reach my email even though I connected Google.">
    Your connection may be missing the Gmail permission, or it may have been disconnected. Ask an email question again and use the **Connect Google** card to reconnect and approve the access. If your org uses [Google Workspace](/help/integrations/google-workspace-org-wide-setup-admin-guide), your admin may need to authorize the scope.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Will Chief send email without me seeing it first?">
    No. Sending shows a **Send this email?** confirmation with the recipients and body, and waits for your approval — unless you've turned on **Send emails** in the tools panel to run without asking.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Why does the Gmail option say "Move to Trash" instead of "Delete"?">
    Chief moves messages to Trash rather than permanently deleting them, and it can restore them from Trash, so the action is reversible.
