# Auto-generated summaries, decisions, action items & chat suggestions

> As a Live Session runs, Chief reads the transcript and surfaces the parts that matter, so you don't have to write them up afterward.

## What Chief extracts from a meeting

As a [Live Session](/help/meetings-live-sessions/what-are-live-sessions) runs, Chief reads the [transcript](/help/meetings-live-sessions/how-transcription-works-speaker-attribution) and surfaces the parts that matter, so you don't have to write them up afterward. Open any session to see them laid out next to the transcript.

## Summary

The **Summary** is a short write-up of what the meeting covered. It appears at the top of the session, above the transcript.

## Action items

**Action items** are the commitments Chief heard. Each one is listed with a check icon, and where Chief picked up who owns it, the owner's name is shown.

## Decisions

**Decisions** are the choices the group reached. They appear in the suggestions panel, each with the timecode where it came up.

## Context

**Context** items are useful background points Chief noticed during the conversation, also timecoded.

## Chat suggestions

**Chat suggestions** are surfaced actions you can hand straight to Chief. Each suggestion has a [**Start chat**](/help/meetings-live-sessions/starting-a-chat-from-a-meeting) button that opens a chat grounded in the meeting to help you act on it. Once you start a chat from a suggestion, it moves into the session's **Chats** list.

<Note>
  ℹ️ **Good to know:** These are generated from the transcript, so they're only as complete as [the audio Chief captured](/help/meetings-live-sessions/starting-a-live-session). A short or partly inaudible meeting produces fewer items.

## FAQ

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="My meeting has no summary or action items. Why?">
    Chief builds these from the transcript. If little or no audio was captured (the transcript is empty or very short), there's nothing to extract. Check that [the Mac app](/help/meetings-live-sessions/installing-the-chief-desktop-app-mac-required-for-capture) had microphone and system-audio access for the session.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="An action item has no owner. Can I still use it?">
    Yes. Chief only attaches an owner when it heard a real name tied to the commitment. Owner-less actions still appear, and you can **Start chat** on them to develop them.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Do summaries update live or only at the end?">
    Items build as the session runs. The Summary is finalized for the completed session.
