# Starting a chat from a meeting

> Every Live Session can become a chat.

## Turn a meeting into action

Every [Live Session](/help/meetings-live-sessions/what-are-live-sessions) can become a [chat](/help/chatting-with-chief/how-chats-work). When you start a chat from a session, the meeting goes into the chat's scope, so Chief answers from that meeting's transcript and [the items it pulled out](/help/meetings-live-sessions/auto-generated-summaries-decisions-action-items-chat-suggestions) — instead of you pasting notes in.

## Start a chat from a suggested action

1. Open **Live Sessions** and open the session.
2. In the suggestions panel, find an item under **Chat suggestions**.
3. Click **Start chat** on that item.

Chief opens a new chat already grounded in the meeting and primed to help you make progress on that action — laying out next steps, relevant facts, and anything you should know.

## Find chats you've started

Once you start a chat from a suggestion, it moves into the session's **Chats** list in the suggestions panel. Click any item there to reopen that chat.

  ℹ️ **Good to know:** The meeting stays attached to the chat as context, so you can keep asking questions and Chief keeps answering from the transcript — not just the first action.

  <Accordion title="I clicked Start chat but nothing seems grounded in the meeting. Why?">
    The chat is created through the normal chat flow and the session is attached to its scope. If answers seem ungrounded, confirm the session has [a transcript](/help/meetings-live-sessions/how-transcription-works-speaker-attribution) and reopen the chat from the session's **Chats** list rather than starting a brand-new, unrelated chat.

  <Accordion title="Can I start a chat from a meeting with no action items?">
    **Start chat** appears on surfaced **Chat suggestions**. If a meeting produced none, you can still start one — select any passage in the transcript and choose **Chat** from [the selection menu](/help/chatting-with-chief/the-text-selection-menu-act-on-any-passage) to open a chat grounded in that meeting.
