# Understanding Organization credit usage

> See where your Organization spends credits, forecast its balance, investigate charges, and export usage data.

Organization Owners can use **Organization → Usage** to see where credits went and whether the current balance will cover upcoming work. The page combines recorded spending, a balance forecast, and the individual charges behind each total.

## Open Organization credit usage

Only Organization Owners can open this page.

1. Open **Organization** from the user menu.
2. Select **Usage** in the Organization navigation.
3. Choose **7 days**, **30 days**, **90 days**, or **12 months**. The selected range updates the totals, charts, comparisons, and charge lists.

You can also open **Organization → Billing** and select **View credit usage**. Both entry points open the same Usage page.

<Note>
  ℹ️ **Good to know:** Usage shows how credits belonging to the Organization were spent. To check credits billed to you personally or to a specific Project, see [Checking your credit balance and usage](/help/plans-credits-billing/checking-your-credit-balance-usage) and [Personal vs. Organization billing](/help/plans-credits-billing/personal-vs-organization-billing).
</Note>

## Read recorded and projected usage

The top of the page separates recorded facts from projections:

* **Credits left** is the Organization's current balance.
* **Credits spent** is billed usage during the selected range. Its change compares that total with the previous equivalent range.
* **Runs out** estimates when the balance reaches zero.
* The **Projected next...** tile carries the selected range's average daily spend forward over the same length of time.
* **Credits to buy** estimates the lowest projected shortfall. If the value is greater than zero, the page offers a shortcut to [buy more credits](/help/plans-credits-billing/refilling-credits).

The forecast includes scheduled refills and credit expirations. In **Balance over time**, the solid line is recorded history and the dashed line is the forecast. Refill and expiry markers show events that change the projected balance.

<Note>
  ℹ️ **Good to know:** The page **counts billed credits only**. Customer-funded turns and free tools are not charged and do not appear here, so the total may not match every activity you saw in Chief.
</Note>

## Compare spending on the Overview tab

Use **Overview** to understand when spending happened and what drove it:

* **Balance over time** combines recorded balance changes with the forecast.
* **Spend over time** groups credits **By activity** or **By project**.
* A **Spike** marks an unusually high-spend day.

Select a segment in the spend chart to open the charges behind that day and activity or Project. The charge list includes its time, resource, charge type, credits, and cost.

If a balance chart starts above zero, Chief displays the starting value below it. This narrower scale makes smaller balance changes easier to read; it does not mean the balance began at zero.

## Investigate and export usage on the Explore tab

Use **Explore** to find the people, Projects, and activities behind the totals.

1. Filter the page by **User**, **Project**, or activity type when you need to narrow the results.
2. Review **Top users**, **Top projects**, and **Top movers** to see the largest totals and the biggest changes from the previous range.
3. Check **Spend by activity**, **Spend by day**, **Spend by user**, or **Spend by project**. Select a row to reveal its individual charges.
4. Select **Export CSV** on a breakdown to download its complete, currently sorted data.
5. Under **What the credits went on**, sort the charged Tasks, Live sessions, and Files. Open an available item to inspect it, or use **Next** and **Previous** to move through the list.

Because Usage breaks spending down by person and Project, Organization Owners can see how members used Organization-funded credits. Collaborators and Readers cannot open Organization settings or this report.

## Understand the recommended plan

When the last 30 days of spending exceed the current plan's included credits, Chief may show **Recommended plan**. This recommendation always uses the last 30 days because plans are billed monthly; changing the date range does not change it.

Select **View plans** to compare the recommendation with the [available Chief plans](/help/plans-credits-billing/plans-overview-explore-pro-power-user-enterprise). Changing plans is separate from buying credits: a refill adds credits to the plan you have now.

## FAQ

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Why don't some tasks or tools appear in Usage?">
    The report counts billed Organization credits only. Customer-funded turns and free tools are not charged and do not appear. A Project may also [use a member's personal balance](/help/plans-credits-billing/personal-vs-organization-billing) instead of the Organization's balance.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Is the forecast a guaranteed run-out date?">
    No. It projects the selected range's recent average daily spend over an equally long future period, including scheduled refills and expirations. New activity or a different spending rate changes the result.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Who can see usage by member and Project?">
    Organization Owners can open the Usage report and see its user and Project breakdowns. Other Organization roles cannot open Organization settings.
