# Roles & access levels: Owner, Collaborator, Reader

> Every member of a Project has exactly one role.

## The three roles

Every member of a Project has exactly one role. The role decides what that person can do.

* **Owner** — Full admin access. Owners can manage the Project, [invite and remove people](/help/projects-sharing-teams/inviting-members-email-domain-invite-link), change settings, and [delete the Project](/help/projects-sharing-teams/deleting-a-project).
* **Collaborator** — Can chat and add Knowledge. Collaborators do the day-to-day work: chatting with Chief and adding files and Knowledge to the [Library](/help/your-knowledge-library/what-is-the-library).
* **Reader** — Can read chats and Knowledge. Readers can see the Project's [chats](/help/chatting-with-chief/how-chats-work) and Library but don't add or change its content.

The **role dropdown** starts at your own role. Owners can grant any of the three roles; Collaborators and Readers can only invite people at their own level.

  ℹ️ **Good to Know:** Everyone you invite is listed in the [**Share this Project** window](/help/projects-sharing-teams/removing-members-managing-access) with their role, so you can see at a glance who has which level of access.

## Set a role when you invite

You choose the role at invite time, in the **Share this Project** window:

1. Open the **Share this Project** window from the Project's card in the **Switch Projects** picker.
2. In the **Invite by Email**, **Domain Access**, or **Share a Secret Link** section, use the **role dropdown** to pick **Owner**, **Collaborator**, or **Reader**.
3. For email and domain invites, each pending entry also has its own dropdown, so you can mix roles in one batch.

<Warning>
  ⚠️ **Important:** Collaborators and Readers can only invite at their own level — they won't see roles above theirs in the dropdown. To grant Owner access, you need to be an Owner yourself.

## Which role should I choose?

* Pick **Owner** only for people you trust to manage membership and settings — Owners can delete the Project.
* Pick **Collaborator** for teammates actively working in the Project.
* Pick **Reader** for stakeholders who need visibility but shouldn't change anything.

## Frequently asked questions

    You can only invite people at or below your own role. If you're a Collaborator or Reader, the dropdown is limited to your level. Ask an Owner to grant Owner access.

  <Accordion title="Can a Reader add files to the Library?">
    No. Readers can read chats and Knowledge but can't add or change content. Move them to Collaborator if they need to contribute.

  <Accordion title="How do I see everyone's role?">
    Open the Project's [members list](/help/organization-administration/managing-members-roles-at-the-org-level). Each member shows a role badge (Owner, Collaborator, or Reader) and how they joined — by Email, Domain, or Link.
